Over 3,000 handmade poppies transform Burgess Hill Constitutional Club for Remembrance

Burgess Hill Constitutional Club has been covered in a striking display of more than 3,000 red and purple poppies, created by volunteers to mark Remembrance this year.

The poppies cascade across the front and side of the building in Cyprus Road, Burgess Hill, with further poppies decorating the back.

The red poppies honour the Armed Forces community, while the purple poppies remember the many animals who served and died in conflict.

Work on the display began in April, where a group of around 12 volunteers met every fortnight to make the poppies. Since then, other local community groups joined in, including Kings Weald Community Group.

The idea stemmed from the clubs close connection with the veterans, who regularly use the space for Burgess Hill Armed Forces & Veterans Breakfast Club and their monthly coffee drop in.

Pam Carey, Chairman of Burgess Hill Constitutional Club, said: “Remembrance has always been close to the heart of our club, and this display is a wonderful tribute to everyone who has served.

“It’s been truly inspiring to see so many people give up their time, month after month, to make it happen. On behalf of the committee and our members, I’d like to thank every volunteer, community group and supporter who has played a part.

“We hope people will come and see it for themselves and, if they can, make a donation to the Royal British Legion.”

Julie Sadler, who set up the project, said: “I’m completely overwhelmed by the response.

“When we started back in April, I never imagined we’d end up with over 3,000 poppies covering the building.

“Every single one has been made with care, and to have poppies arrive from friends and family as far away as Scotland and Wales was incredibly moving. Seeing it all go up has been a really emotional moment, and I can’t thank everyone enough for being part of it.”

The club is inviting visitors to stop by and see the display, and is asking for donations to the Royal British Legion. It will also be open for a buffet after the Remembrance Parade on Sunday November 8.

The display will be in place for the next seven to ten days on Cyprus Road.
