The Christmas Sussex Belle arrived in Hastings yesterday afternoon (November 19) and attracted hundreds of spectators along the way.

The beautiful steam locomotive started its journey at 10:45am from London Victoria and travelled south along the main line towards Brighton, passing through East Croydon, Redhill, Gatwick Airport, Three Bridges and Haywards Heath.

Finally arriving at Eastbourne just before 2pm, the steam loco was serviced and then pulled to Hastings by West Coast Railways' Class 47 812, a diesel-electric locomotive developed in the 1960s by Brush Traction.

Leaving Hastings slightly late, at around 4:15pm, Merchant Navy Class 35028 Clan Line, The Christmas Sussex Belle steam locomotive, then made its way back to London Victoria via West St Leonards and Tunbridge Wells.

Local railway enthusiast, Kevin Boorman, said: "35028 was built at Eastleigh in 1948 and initially worked between London and Dover, including trains such as The Golden Arrow and the Night Ferry.

"After its rebuild in 1959, it worked on the South Western main line, on trains such as the Bournemouth Belle and the Atlantic Coast Express."
