Pub boosts charity campaign in memory of Yapton mum

When much-loved Susan Liddle died from a brain tumour her husband Simon and young son Ben were determined to honour her memory by raising funds for a charity close to their hearts.

They set about fundraising and have now collected almost £2,500 for the brain cancer charity Brainstrust UK -- and plan to redouble their efforts with an upcoming sponsored walk.

Simon, 51, and Ben, 11, who live in Yapton, will be joined by family and friends to cover a five-mile sponsored walk starting from The Murrell Arms on May 23.

It follows the latest group donation of more than £352 from regulars at the Yapton Road pub through a meat raffle organised by manager Jane Morgan. And generous landlord Andy will double that figure.

Company director Susan died in January 2020 aged 45 after being diagnosed just six weeks earlier.

Simon, who runs his own painting and decorating company, said: “We want to try to help anyone going through what we have been through and if we can make even the slightest difference for someone then that will be fantastic.

“We have been through it and know just how hard it is.

“Obviously, Sue didn’t make it but we can move on and remember her by our fundraising and hope we can help others in doing so.”

Brainstrust UK provides personalised support and builds resources that help people with a brain tumour and their loved ones live the life they want after diagnosis.

A spokesman said: “We work with people in the clinical setting to secure the best possible care for people with a brain tumour and we campaign to solve real issues, because we understand what challenges people with a brain tumour face.

“Our support is available to everybody affected by any type of brain tumour.”
