Around one in five rabbits are still being fed the incorrect diet, including muesli-style mixes, excessive amounts of pellets and treats, or insufficient hay and grass. The findings suggest around 180,000 rabbits nationally could be receiving diets that increase their risk of obesity, dental disease and digestive problems.
The research also found that while awareness of rabbit nutrition has improved significantly in recent years, misconceptions about what rabbits should eat remain widespread.
Gemma Price, Head of Prevention and Education at Raystede, said: "Many people are surprised to learn that hay should make up the vast majority of a rabbit's diet. Rabbits have evolved to spend much of their day grazing and foraging, and their digestive systems and teeth depend on a constant supply of fibre.
"Unfortunately, many rabbits are still being fed too many pellets, treats or muesli mixes, which can lead to serious health and welfare issues. The good news is that making changes to a rabbit's diet can have a positive impact on their wellbeing."
To help owners learn more about providing the best possible care for their rabbits, Raystede is hosting its popular All About Rabbits Day on Saturday 4 July.
This free event will give rabbit owners the opportunity to learn more about rabbit nutrition, housing, behaviour, enrichment, and healthcare. Visitors will be able to learn practical ways to improve their rabbits' wellbeing, including advice on creating healthy feeding routines and understanding what a balanced rabbit diet looks like.
Gemma continues: "Nutrition is one of the most important factors influencing a rabbit's quality of life, yet it's also one of the areas where simple changes can make a huge difference. Our All About Rabbits Day is a fantastic opportunity for owners to ask questions, learn from experienced rabbit carers and discover practical ways to help their pets live longer, healthier and happier lives."
The event will also include information on rabbit companionship, adoption, healthcare and enrichment, as well as family-friendly activities and opportunities to find out more about Raystede’s rabbit bonding service.
All About Rabbits Day takes place at Raystede on Saturday 4 July from 10am to 4pm. Entry is free, but advance booking is essential.
