“Two crews from Bognor Regis, along with one from Chichester and one from Littlehampton attended the scene with the Command Support Unit from Haywards Heath,” a fire service spokesperson said.

“Upon arrival they found a fire in the basement of the property, which was unoccupied and under renovation.

“The fire was quickly located and extinguished by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus who used two high pressure hose reels and one safety jet to extinguish the fire.

“The flat suffered extensive fire damage, and heavy smoke damage to the rest of the flat.”

The flats above suffered with ‘light smoke logging’, the fire service said.

To make the electricity supply safe, Southern Scottish Electricity (SSE) attended to cap the supply in the road.

The last crew left the scene just before 12.30am.
