Retired GP, 96, walks 100 times around his Shoreham home for Crisis, in support of the homeless

John, who is 96, is walking 100 times around Ropetackle in Shoreham to raise money for Crisis, in support of the homeless.

He has already beaten his target of £500, before he is even halfway through, but is determined to carry on for the whole of May, as planned.

John was a doctor on the East Lincolnshire coast between 1954 and 1968, worked in Norwich from 1968 to 1985 and was then a locum in the parish of Hellesdon until he retired. His son Jonathan, who lives in Hove, followed in his footsteps and was a GP at Shoreham Health Centre in Pond Road.

John has so far completed 45 times around Ropetackle and raised more than £1,000.

He said: “I live in a beautiful flat in Ropetackle. Until I eventually retired aged 78, I had spent my life as a GP.

“Inspired by Captain Tom, I am walking 100 times around my block of flats during May for Crisis, which helps the homeless, because I have always had a beautiful home and they have not.

“It’s a fair way and the most times I can manage is five in one day.”

John’s circular route takes him around Ropetackle and Broad Reach, and he encourages anyone who spots him to give him a wave.

Isobel O’Toole, his granddaughter, said: “He’s nearly been knocked out by the wind multiple times. I want to do anything I can to raise awareness for him.”
