Second demonstration against racism is held in Shoreham

Around 70 people gathered in Shoreham on a blazingly hot Saturday for a socially-distanced anti-racism demonstration.

Samba drummers and the Extinction Rebellion First Aid and Well-being Team joined the peaceful march from Coronation Green across the bridge to the Adur Recreation Ground.

It was an opportunity to celebrate the Adur and Worthing Council motion in support of #blacklivesmatter and adopted unanimously on July 16 – read more here.

The motion, tabled by Councillor Sami Zeglam, condemned the killing of George Floyd in the USA.

It also promised that local councillors would pressure the national government to address the disproportionate impact of Covid-19 on Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people.

Speakers at the event on Saturday included Keturah Maelo, who reminded residents that this motion now reaffirms the council’s duty to work towards eradicating racism.

Mark Raven, chairman of Sussex County Lawn Tennis Club in Southwick, told those gathered that ‘sport and culture being where we share our humanity and values’ and how this helps us build friendships through learning about each other.

Taher Aziz of the Adur Muslim Centre spoke about how the killing of George Floyd by American police officers in May had been so deeply felt around the world that many now understood the importance of community solidarity against racism.

Pauline Rutter called for the local education authority, schools and colleges to lead the way in addressing racism in education while also supporting teachers, pupils and the community in being proudly anti-racist.

Young people came to the stage to talk about their visions for climate justice and social justice and a fully anti-racist curriculum that helps inspire and unite us all.

The event was organised by the new local group Shoreham-By-Sea Against Racism.
