Slice of Sussex: Marples Cakery brings its award-winning cakes to high street

Marples Cakery, the multi-award-winning Sussex-based cake business has announced the opening of its first high street cake shop.

Serving locally roasted coffees and speciality teas alongside an extensive selection of handcrafted cakes, bakes and sweet treats, the new shop will open its doors in Hurstpierpoint High Street on Saturday November 14.

The business, established in 2018 by Alice Marples has been a staple of many local birthdays, anniversaries, christenings and events with their impressive bespoke occasion bakes as well as treats for everyday indulgences.

Alice’s passion for baking began when she was on chemotherapy as a child – a hobby she could do from the safety of home while her immunity was compromised by treatment.

Her love for baking only flourished as she got older and received the ‘all clear’ – taking her to Paris to do patisserie courses including one at Le Cordon Bleu, before starting her own company from home in Sussex.

The local business owner said: "Opening a cake and coffee shop has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember, so seeing that dream realised is incredibly special.

"To be opening our first shop in Hurstpierpoint, the village where I grew up and went to school, makes this moment even more meaningful.

"Marples Cakery has grown so much over the years thanks to the support of our wonderful customers and I can't wait to welcome both familiar faces and new visitors through the door.

"More than anything, I hope the shop becomes a place where people can take a moment out of their day to enjoy great coffee, delicious cake and a little bit of everyday joy.”

Alice is also a highly recommended wedding cake supplier, supplying cakes and bakes for over 80 local weddings a year and is a recommended supplier by a number of Sussex wedding venues as well as a Hitched Wedding Award winner.

In the height of Covid lockdown in 2020, Marples Cakery expanded and adapted by launching postal brownies on their website for UK nationwide delivery – something they still offer – and went on to be awarded a Great Taste Award in 2024 for their white chocolate chunk brownies.

Elsewhere, they feature in the Muddy Stilettos Little Black Book of Best Businesses and was a previous finalist of both The Dynamic Awards as well as the Central South Business Awards.

Located at 56 High Street Hurstpierpoint, Marples Cakery will offer a tempting range of cupcakes, brownies, blondies and more alongside speciality espresso coffee from locally run Horsham Coffee Roasters.

Customers can also enjoy a selection of teas, soft drinks and even ‘pup-cups’ for their four-legged friends.

From Saturday November 14, Marples Cakery will be open in Hurstpierpoint High Street Wednesday to Friday, 8.30am-4.30pm and Saturdays 8.30am-3pm.
