The comments came after Cllr Greenway urged Sussex Police and the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership to crackdown on dangerous driving, allowing residents to report speeding without the offender’s full licence plate.

"Reporting is a vital part of effective policing,” he said said. “But when reporting speeding via the Operation Crackdown website, a full licence plate number is required. Residents tell me that this creates a barrier for reporting their concerns to the police.”

Although Cllr Greenway focused on Bersted and Bognor Regis, his suggestion prompted comments and ideas from readers in a number of surrounding villages.

“Try living in the “rat run” villages of Barnham/Yapton,” said Hayley Smith. “One stupid speed camera in Barnham and that’s it. Good luck as our village has been asking for a camera for years, now with over 1000 new houses it’s only going to get worse. No stupid poster will sort it.”

Other readers urged members of the public to continue reporting incidents, despite the alleged problems. Ian Manion declared his support for the Conservative councillor: “100% behind you Keir Greenway We need to change the Public perception of the Police. People need to stop reporting things on Social Media.

"If enough people report it gets flagged. Investigations are started and action taken if required.”

Reader Scott Devine, meanwhile, urged others to take action by joining Community Speedwatch. He said: “Why don't some of the keener and more vocal of you apply to the community speed watch scheme? It's a start while you wait for nothing else to happen. And in the time you wrote a comment, read others and possibly reply, you actually could be doing something to help.

"Police are understaffed and are aimed at (targeting) revenue-earning offences.”

Cllr Greenway also said he is urging parish councils in Bersted and Bognor to invest in Speed Indicating Devices, which, when activated flash the actual speed limit of a given road back at an offending driver. He called them a “cost effective way that parish councils can incentivise drivers to reduce their speed.”
