St Wilfrid’s Hospice says it needs generous donations ‘now more than ever’ after all its fundraising events have been cancelled and its shops closed due to the outbreak.

This has left a ‘serious shortfall’ in the income the charity needs to provide specialist support to end of life patients and those who love them, it says.

In an emotional appeal, St Wilfrid’s said, “Help St Wilfrid’s to keep caring through the COVID-19 crisis.

“Now more than ever we need the help of our generous supporters as we prepare to care for an increased number of patients following the COVID-19 outbreak.

“We are asking you to stand with us at this time.”

The charity has suggested some fun and creative ways people can help fundraise from home. This includes a virtual Three Peaks challenge, step challenge, transformation challenge and cycling challenge.

People who now work from home could donate their travel costs. Or, as restaurants and pubs are closed, the charity suggests people could donate the equivalent of a meal out for its patients.

Chief Executive, David Scott-Ralphs, said, “We welcome the announcement from the Government last week of a funding package for charities, with some of this specifically targeted at hospices. This is intended to cover a proportion of lost fundraising and charity shops’ income over the next three months, but will not fully replace lost income.

“At the same time we are gearing up to support more people during this coronavirus crisis, so I really want to encourage our local community to support us through our emergency appeal and all the different ways we are suggesting during this lockdown period.”
