Summer colour brings prizes at West Sussex village rose show

Summer colour brought a steady stream of visitors to East Preston & Kingston Horticultural Society’s annual rose show.

The Miller Barn at East Preston and Kingston Village Hall had plenty to admire, with roses in every shade, delicately-scented sweet peas, vibrant fuchsias and an impressive selection of vegetables and fruit for the show on June 20.

Two novelty classes added a touch of fun – charming miniature gardens and characterful animals crafted from fruit and vegetables.

The most fragrant rose, chosen by public vote, was awarded to Patti Dean, who also received the Lilian Hoskins Bowl as the winner of the mixed rose class.

Carol Longman won four trophies, the British Fuchsia Society Blue Rosette for best fuchsia, Pryor Cup for best rose exhibit in show, Renée Lawrence Cup for best specimen rose and Helen Cryer Memorial Bowl for most points in show.

Colin Crane won two trophies, the Springett Cup for best specimen sweet pea and Challenge Cup for best delphinium.

Other trophy winners were Paige Joseph, Medhurst Trophy for the child with most points in show; Sarah Chandler, Butterfill Cup for most points in sweet pea classes; and Jennifer Wallace, Norman and Ann Brown Trophy for three different stages of development of the same variety of rose.

Other first prize winners were Aileen Cooper, Caroline Frake, Sarah Hill, Laura Joseph, Pauline McLelland, Emily Wilkinson, Isabella Wilkinson, John Frake, Terry Longman, John Cole, Primrose Buckley and Diana Buckley.

Celia Buckley said: “Join us in bringing the next flower show to life. Every exhibit contributes to a glorious display. Entry to compete is just 25p per exhibit, with cups and trophies to be won.

“Our next flower show is on Saturday, August 1, at the Warren Recreation Ground and Village Hall. We have classes in flowers, fruit, vegetables, cookery, photography, handicraft and floral art.

“Children are welcome to compete in the adult classes as well as in the special children's classes. Entry forms must be submitted by 4pm on the Wednesday before the show.”
