Tangmere residents warned of low-flying jets over former RAF airfield

Residents in Tangmere have been warned to expect a sudden burst of noise, when two military fast jets route over the village.

The social media notice was issued by the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum.

The aircraft are expected to pass over the former RAF Tangmere airfield at around 2.20pm, on Monday, July 20. The jets are expected to fly relatively low and may be ‘quite loud’, prompting the museum to advise vulnerable residents to be prepared.

The warning was shared to help prevent distress among residents who may be sensitive to unexpected loud noises and to encourage neighbours to pass the information on to those not using social media.

Following questions online about whether the aircraft would be current military jets or historic aircraft, the museum declined to provide further details, stating: "This post is only intended to alert any vulnerable residents. CAA rules are very strict about what can and cannot be said."

No additional information has been released regarding the type of aircraft involved or the reason for the planned flypast.

Tangmere's aviation heritage dates back to 1918, with the former RAF station serving as one of Britain's best-known fighter airfields before closing in 1970. Today, the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum occupies part of the historic site.
