The ‘Redoubt Crochet Fairy’ on Facebook, who wished to remain anonymous, posted on social media to show the damage.
They said that having passed the display at 7:45pm on Thursday (November 5), it was ‘absolutely fine’.
But they were then alerted to the damage at about 10:50pm and said parts of the display were ‘ripped off’ and poppies were ‘ground into the mud’.
And the ‘Crochet Fairy’ believes the damage to the display was ‘mindless vandalism’.
They said: “I was just so upset because the materials cost quite a bit of money, but they could be replaced.
“It was anger and just utter horror that something so significant was damaged. The lack of respect – they might as well walk on veterans’ graves.”
They said that, while paying tribute to veterans, the display was intended for elderly people in the area who may not be able to make it into the town centre to mark Remembrance.
Despite this unfortunate incident, the ‘Crochet Fairy’ said they were ‘blown away’ by the positive comments left on their Facebook about the decorations.
They have also been creating postbox toppers for many years, including one of a soldier for this year’s Remembrance.
