According to the Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team, it was first sent to Medmerry Beach shortly after 5.40pm on Wednesday but it was deemed too unsafe to continue ‘due to search conditions’.

Along with Littlehampton Coastguard Rescue Team, it was retasked at 12pm on Thursday afternoon ‘in daylight at the next low tide’.

A spokesperson said: “A search was carried out of the beach and multiple pieces of ordnance were found. A cordon was put in place and the beach was closed to the public.

“E.O.D (Explosive Ordnance Disposal team) carried out a successful controlled explosion, and the beach was later reopened.

“If you come across any ordnance on the beach or something you are unsure of please do not touch it and dial 999 straight away and ask for the Coastguard.

“Ordnance comes in all shapes and sizes and ordnance found on this beach has been found to be highly explosive like some of the items today, so please do not touch it and call the Coastguard.”
