An Eastbourne dad who started a YouTube channel for his children dedicated to night fishing now has thousands of subscribers and reached all over Europe with his content.

Dad Jason Scott started The Eastbourne Fisherman channel to show his five children what sea fishing at night was like - because they are too young to go out during that time - and how much more active the experience is.

Jason said, “My kids couldn’t come sea fishing at first and I thought ‘what can I do to engage them?’ They are constantly watching YouTube all the time, so I thought that was a cool idea and I could use it as a platform.”

The fisherman, who started the channel aimed at beginners in November 2019, said he had an initial target of 100 subscribers to sign up to his content but has now hit more than 1,300, with thousands of video views.

Jason said, “I didn’t really think anything of it then people started to subscribe and watch my content, which I found crazy.

“It has grown more than I ever expected with members from all over the UK and some into Europe and beyond, which still amazes me.”

Jason is using his platform now to help support local tackle shops from Southend to Bristol and including his local, Anglers Den in Pevensey Bay – especially since the coronavirus pandemic has hit some shops hard.

He said, “The virus has hit and it has been really difficult for tackle shops. A lot of them are closing so we have started competitions to support your local tackle company.

“We have nearly 70 tackle shops join this campaign to promote shopping local and reducing online spending for fishing items.”

One competition, Jason said, is for children to send in their couloured-in drawings of fish to The Eastbourne Fisherman Facebook page where four winners will be pulled from a hat and receive prizes, which include fishing rods and reel packs.

Jason said his team has also been doing lots in the community and is working closely with sea fishing organisations, like the Eastbourne RNLI, to put together educational fishing packs to help children into fishing.
