In true steadfast Sussex tradition, Uckfield Bonfire and Carnival Society still managed to stage a breathtaking show last weekend - in spite of restrictions designed to keep people safe.

The Society staged its triumphant kick-off to the Autumn bonfire season with two days of celebration. Although walkers did not carry their traditional flaming torches, members proudly lit and lifted their fiery pieces at the end of the parade.

Streets were lined with supporters as marchers strode by confidently. Watchers were encouraged to bring their own fairy lights and lanterns and the town's darkening streets resembled a magical grotto as light after light illuminated the way ahead.

In line with Government advice, the Society cancelled its Friday night fireworks display. This was because prolonged hot and dry weather had triggered warnings about potential wildfire risks. However Uckfield's event has always been much more than simply fireworks.

At 9am on Saturday morning children in fancy dress processed down the High Street, followed by a grand procession and judging at the Station Car Park in the early afternoon.

Excitement built as the main event drew nearer., At 6.45pm tableaux assembled in Bell Lane and the grand torchlight procession began in Grange Road at 7.30pm. The final torchlight procession left Grange Road at 9pm followed by Bonfire Prayers conducted by Holy Cross Church outside the Cinque Ports Club. Presentations took place from 10pm at Uckfield Civic Centre.

Levels of excitement remained high all day. While the firework display is always hugely popular, townspeople agreed the exuberance and excitement of parades more than made up for the loss of one event. Hopes remain high for next year's Carnival.

Bonfire Society members converged on Uckfield from across Sussex. For many watchers the Bonfire season cannot come round fast enough!

Events and parades will be staged on most weekends from now on, with Fletching and Crowborough next in line on September 12.
