However it also issued an apology to motorists, after one of its road closures at the north end of Uckfield was put in place ‘on the wrong side of a major road junction, which caused unnecessary problems for people trying to get to Manor Park’.
Writing on its Facebook page, a society spokesperson said: “Anyone who has been involved in a long running event, especially one that is part of a long running tradition, will know the work that goes into planning and working with the various authorities, so to have to make such significant changes at short notice was an extremely hard thing for us to do.
"All your support over this weekend has made those hard decisions worthwhile, and we are proud to be part of both the Uckfield community and the wider community of Sussex Bonfire and Carnival.
"Our final procession was carefully planned and risk assessed to ensure we could still provide a little of our tradition amongst the sea of lights that was a first for Sussex Bonfire."
Writing about the road closure problem, the spokesperson said it appeared to be ‘a genuine mistake’ by the organisation and its volunteers.
They said: “We will make sure this is not repeated in the future.”
