Waverley paddle steamer appeal launched ahead of return to Sussex in 2026

Waverley, the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer, has launched a winter appeal to replace her masts and dining saloon windows before returning to Sussex in 2026.

The Masts & Windows Winter Appeal hopes to raise £135,000 to replace traditional features which are central to Waverley’s distinctive profile. The Paddle Steamer Preservation Society says renewing them in authentic materials is essential to preserving the ship’s historic character and renewed appearance.

Paul Semple, Waverley general manager, said: “Essentially, many parts of the ship could be replaced with more modern materials and fittings, which may last longer but collectively that would change the look and feel of the ship.

"Preserving Waverley is about maintaining her as far as is possible as she was intended to be. We are preserving her truly unique character. As the world continuously changes around Waverley, she becomes even more special as she represents a moment in time when she was first designed and built.”

Many refurbishments have taken place in the past 50 years and although it has not always been possible to fully preserve her original 1947 character, Waverley's owning charity, Waverley Steam Navigation Co, remains fully committed to maintaining her traditional style wherever possible.

The winter refit is well underway, with essential maintenance and several major investment projects in progress. These include replacing the fire sprinkler system and renewing the port paddlebox spring beam – works that will cost more than £500,000 alone, jointly funded by the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society and Waverley Steam Navigation Co.

To allow the work on Waverley’s two masts and the 13 dining saloon windows to be completed by March 2026, Waverley’s supporters are being asked to help raise £135,000. Contributions, large or small, will help prepare Waverley for the 2026 season, during which she will proudly mark the 80th anniversary of her launch.

Donations can be made online at waverleyexcursions.co.uk, or by contacting Waverley’s Booking Office on 0141 243 2224 during office hours.

Waverley will return to Sussex as part of the South Coast and Isle of Wight schedule in early September 2026, with full timetable details being released and bookings opening in March.
