"We were struck down in our prime and are slowly building up again”: Saltdean Jazz Band looking for new members

The Saltdean Jazz Band (SJB) is looking for new members to join its organisation, which aims to get people together of all ability levels to play music.

The group rehearses every Thursday between 7:30pm and 9:30pm and say no auditions are required for new members, with their being more focus on having fun and bringing the community together through music.

Janet Kelly, Founder of SJB, said: “All levels of player are welcome so if you play keyboard, trumpet, trombone, guitar, clarinet, sax, violin, harmonica, flute - or even just a triangle – please get in touch.

"It doesn’t matter if you haven’t played for a while, are learning or nervous as we will welcome everyone. There are no scary auditions so just come along and see what you think. There will be plenty of opportunities to learn as you go along.”

SJB support local events and charities with live performances and play the music of the established big bands such as Count Basie, Glen Miller, Duke Ellington and much more.

Janet said: “Our aim is to grow sufficiently to be able to provide low cost live music for community and charity events – we have already played for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in Oval Park and have other gigs lined up for later in the year.

“We started two weeks before lockdown so were struck down in our prime and are slowly building up again.”
