Wick youth centre flourishing again

A WICK youth centre has bounced back from near-closure after county council cuts in funding, to now opening five nights a week.

The Keystone Centre, in Eldon Way, is running sessions every weeknight, including a dance group on Mondays and freestyle wrestling on Tuesdays.

A partnership with Littlehampton Town Council and sheer hard work by the centre’s staff, volunteers and management committee have revived the club’s fortunes, just a few months after cuts led to its closure for all but one two-hour session a week.

The new daily schedule is: Monday, 4-5pm, Move! dance group, ages seven-11, term time only; Tuesday, 5.30-7pm, Littlehampton and Rustington Olympic Freestyle Wrestling Club, ages five-12 – free tasters, April 3 and 10; Wednesday, 7-9pm, senior session, ages 13-19 (term time only); Thursday, 4-6pm, junior session, ages eight-12 (term time only); Friday, 7-9pm, drop-in for seniors.

Outside organisations are being encouraged to book the centre for training sessions and meetings in a bid to develop a new source of income, with one charity based at Arundel already booking three days next month. Two children’s parties are also being held there soon.

Mike Northeast, chairman, praised everyone for pulling together for the centre’s future.
