A woman who lives near Horsham fears a ‘huge’ tree may fall and kill her and her husband.

Peggy White, of Sullington Mead in Broadbridge Heath, said she is ‘terrified’ the tree – which is about four feet from her window – will smash her roof along with her and her husband if it falls.

She said: “It’s stopping me from sleeping at night. We’re both getting on for 90. It’s awful.

Peggy, 88, said the tree towers above the telephone wires and if it falls will ‘smash our house to pieces’.

She added that there is also a second tree which if it falls will hit her daughter’s bedroom.

Peggy is calling for both trees to be felled amid fears they could hurt her family.

She said: “I would really like to see them both cut down to be quite honest. Whether I’ll get anything done I don’t know.

“Whichever one falls this way it’s going to kill us.”

A Horsham District Council spokeswoman said the trees have been drawn to the attention of the council.

She added: “The trees are not located on council owned land, the land is owned by Sussex Weald.

“This particular resident has been advised to approach Sussex Weald about this situation.

“It is however, the opinion of the council that the trees do not pose danger to residents or the public.”

A Saxon Weald spokeswoman said: “Saxon Weald completed works to remove tree deadwood in Sullington Mead in July 2019.

“However, we have not been contacted directly about the present concerns, so this is the first time it has been brought to our attention.

“We take tree concerns very seriously at Saxon Weald, and will arrange for our tree specialists to conduct a survey to identify any safety issues.

“We will then complete any work deemed necessary to ensure the safety of residents living nearby.”
