Worthing's Food and Drink festival has been cancelled for 2020 amid safety fears and need to support local traders.

The Steyne Gardens event has been a staple of the Worthing summer since 2012, but organisers said they were concerned for the safety of everyone involved and did not want to provide added competition to town centre traders getting back on their feet after lockdown.

Town centre manager Sharon Clarke said: "The entire Food Festival team are very disappointed that there won’t be a 2020 event but safety comes first and with the restrictions and social distancing needed it would not be the same event as everyone loves. The plans for 2021 are already underway and everyone is committed to making it the best yet."

In a Facebook post this morning (July 24), the Town Centre Initiative said that, after much deliberation, the directors felt the event would not have the same ambience as previous years and the expectations of visitors, traders and town centre businesses may not be met.

Next year's event is already planned for the weekend of September 11/12, 2021.
