Woodstock Day Nursery, in Farncombe Road, asked people to bring in groceries and toiletries for Worthing Food Foundation, based in East Worthing.

Anne Shrieves, owner and nursery manager, said: “The response was amazing. The bags would only just fit into an estate car when collected.

“Rather than ask our families for money for Children in Need, we thought we would see if we could provide some direct support to local families and let the children see how a community can care for others during difficult times.

“Within an hour of publishing our request, the first bag of groceries appeared and for the next three days, the bags just kept coming in, including everything from tinned food to pasta to biscuits to nappies and even toothpaste and soap.

“Thanks to our wonderful and very generous families, we handed everything over to Carl Walker, representing Worthing Food Foundation. He assured us that everything would benefit local families.”

Worthing Food Foundation is based at East Worthing Baptist Church, in Penhill Road, and it has a temporary shop in Ann Street, redistributing good-quality school uniform, coats and shoes. It will soon be collecting clothing and toys for Christmas.
