Founded in March, the food bank has hit the ground running and recently won three prestigious awards in just six weeks.

Pia Offord, trustee and founder, said: “The pantry is supporting citizens from all walks of life, providing vegan non-perishable, in-date food and hygiene products to vegans and non-vegans alike.

“Throughout the ongoing Covid-19 implications, the food bank has been working tirelessly to ensure all food and hygiene items are safe while keeping pick-up times flexible.

“Unprecedented times require new ways of community interactivity and the food bank has been on the forefront of making healthy and nutritious essentials available for those in need with special dietary requirements, food allergies and intolerances.”

Pia was personally recognised by the High Sheriff of West Sussex with his Special Recognition Volunteer Award and by the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association in Taiwan.

Ching Hai, founder of the Loving Hut vegan restaurant chain, said: “The award is presented in recognition of Pia’s untiring dedication and support towards neighbours in need, for selfless commitment helping the less fortunate, for uplifting the community spirit and providing hope and relief to citizens during troubled times, and for your considerate wisdom, we laud the compassionate deeds of Pia Offord.”

The notable honour came with a vital grant, which will mean the food bank can reach more families in need through a pop-up soup kitchen.

The food bank has been actively working with similar causes and the Worthing-based Caring for the Animals Trust. For this, it was awarded the Best Supporter of Animal Charities by Facebook community group Foodie Forum for Veggies, Vegans and Wannabees.
