Would potential ban on pavement parking be welcomed in Midhurst?

Proposals to ban pavement parking across the UK have been backed by the vice-chairman of Midhurst Town Council.

Steve Morley, who has spoken out in the past against the ‘dangerous and selfish’ issue, welcomed the government’s plans for a consultation.

He said: “Personally I welcome the Transport Secretary’s plans for a consultation on the subject. Pavement parking is a bane for many Midhurst residents and traders alike.

“It causes a lot of anxiety and causes thousands of pounds in damage.”

With the exception of London — where a ban already exists — only lorries are currently prevented from pavement parking in the UK.

Last week, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said any consultation would look at a range of options, including giving local authorities extended powers to crack down on this behaviour. However, the AA argued that a ban could have ‘unintended consequences’ and cause ‘parking chaos’.

Mr Morley said he did not feel this perception applied to Midhurst as it has ‘three convenient car parks’.
