Fittingly the celebration was held at the start of National Allotments Week.

Secretary Royston Godwin said: “There was more to celebrate as earlier in the week Councillor Ian Potter’s “Rye Amenity Community Interest Company” had been confirmed as the management company for the two remaining cultivated areas of Rye’s ancient sites.

“The Association is therefore taking its first step towards self-management on behalf of the CIC, although the legal fight to have Rye Town Council acknowledged as the legal owners of all the historic provably statutory allotment land goes on.”

Around 58 people attended the party and enjoyed Yvonne Vicarey’s tenth-birthday cake, while the barbecue produced such delights as Adam Smith’s pork loins marinaded in an orange sauce.

Mr Godwin said: “The organisers deserve our congratulations. They even arranged excellent weather.”

Rye’s Ninth Flower and Vegetable Show will be held on Saturday September 1 in the Community Centre on Conduit Hill. It is open to the public from 2pm, so even people who have not entered can come in and see the exhibits, and have a cup of tea and a piece of cake supplied by the Landgate Women’s Institute. Brochures are available free from numerous outlets around the town, giving the various classes, and the rules.
