Petanque is a form of boules where the goal is to toss or roll hollow steel balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet (literally “piglet”) or jack, while standing inside a circle with both feet on the ground.

Experienced petanque players will be on hand to offer advice on playing the game.

Councillor Chris Mullins, cabinet member for Wellbeing, said: “Head to Tilgate Park on June 28, and try your hand at petanque. It’s great fun and sociable so bring your friends!”

The petanque area, known as a piste, is set against of the beautiful backdrop of the Walled Garden, is free to use and equipment can be borrowed from the Tilgate Nature Centre shop.

Due to its construction the piste can be moved anywhere within the arena or removed altogether if a large event is using the space.

In addition to hosting events, the arena is available as a picnic area for schools and park visitors.
