Muriel Turner: We start this week on a sad note with the passing away of Muriel on Saturday June 18, just a few months short of her 90th birthday.

Although not strictly a Pett resident, she lived just across the border in Guestling, Muriel was very much involved with the village. Muriel moved into Pett Road with her parents many years ago and worked for the War Commission in the years immediately after the Second World War. She then went on to work for the Civil Service.

She was also very much involved with Pett church and had been a member of the choir for more that 60 years and occasionally attended services at Pett Methodist chapel. In addition, she was one of the distributors for Pett Parish News, who turned out every month to make sure her ‘people’ received their copy.

Muriel was also a member of Pett WI. In fact she and her mother joined it many years ago but she later became a member of St Helens WI, which met in the evenings. Some years ago when Pett WI was in danger of closing, Muriel and another member of St Helens WI became dual members of both St Helens and Pett WIs and took on the role of Secretary, which they managed between them. This enabled Pett WI to survive to see its centenary next year.

She subsequently became President and then continued to serve on the Committee. Her continued commitment to the WI and her ongoing example of willingness to help, together with her appreciation and support made her a stalwart of Pett WI and she will be very much missed.
