Picturing The Past

THIS week the West Sussex Gazette launches Picturing The Past '“ a monthly dip into a major photographic resource.

Worthing Library is home to a significant collection of West Sussex images '“ so much so that from 2003-2004, 200 people visited the town to use the collection.

Then came the digital revolution with the West Sussex Past Pictures website, which launched in June 2004.

From 2004-2005, 30,000 people visited the collection via the web and the figure has continued to climb. The site has just attracted its 1.5 millionth visitor. Meanwhile, the number of images on it has risen from 6,000 to almost 10,000.

In the Gazette this week (issue dated July 9, 2008), we take a look at bygone Shoreham. The town fares particularly well in the collection, with a good number of fascinating images, including this one of the Albion Steam Brewery in High Street.
