Plans to oppose anti-refugee protest in Hastings

Far-right groups are planning to protest in Hastings against the council taking in refugees on Saturday (October 22).

South Coast Resistance organised the demonstration after Hastings Borough Council pledged to take in 100 Syrian refugees.

The group claims the council should not be helping them when it cannot house homeless people in the town.

“We are holding a protest because as far as we are concerned if Hastings council can afford to house refugees in front of our own homeless people then they can afford to police a series of demonstrations,” a group spokesman said.

“We aren’t releasing our demo spot we will just turn up and flash demo for which we don’t need permission.”

Hastings Supports Refugees and Hastings Solidarity are planning to oppose the protest as on the same day, a food donation day in support of refugees in Calais and the local food bank is being held.

“We would ask that everyone involved in Hastings Solidarity comes down to Hastings town centre near Debenhams this Saturday to show the world what solidarity looks like,” a Hastings Solidarity spokesman said.

“Please share this call out as widely as possible – bring friends, family, comrades, neighbours, workmates. We need to have as many people out as possible.

“Join us in solidarity with our brothers and sisters who come here from across the sea as refugees fleeing war and terror - and with our friends and family here in our community who are suffering the effects of the government’s class war austerity measures, declining wages and homelessness.”
