Planting day is a success for Billingshurst garden project

Children and volunteers joined in a planting day at Station Road Gardens in Billingshurst on May 10.

Keith Brown, of Friends of Station Road Gardens, told the County Times: “The trustees of Station Road Gardens recently decided and agreed that a raised sensory garden would be a very good addition to the gardens and set about sourcing the funds needed to complete this.

“This garden was designed around the needs of the disabled and those with special needs within our community for both children and adults.

“The planting would give them the opportunity and benefit of experiencing the three senses of seeing, smelling and touching that sensory planting gives to us all.

“The raised garden has been built, and was planted on Tuesday 10th May with the help of one disabled young lady from Billingshurst; volunteers from Wakoo’s Children Centre, Billinghurst; students from The Weald School, Billingshurst; and secondary children from Ingfield Manor.

“It was the children that made this planting day very special, and it was very plain to see that they all were very happy to be involved and enjoyed the experience.

“We thank them and their carers for coming along on the day and making this happen.

“We would like to thank all those that supported us. They are: Billingshurst Lions Club; Billingshurst MOT Station; and Think Family, all for their financial support.

“A special thank you to Tony Campbell and HMS Ford volunteers for building the raised bed; Thakeham Homes and Travis Perkins for the supply of building materials; Tesco Stores, Billingshurst and Pulborough for the supply of refreshments/food on the day.

“It is hoped that this sensory garden will be viewed with respect and enjoyed for many years to come, not only by people with disabilities or special needs, but by the community as a whole.”
