Playden village voice

Drip, drip, drop, little April Showers. It is softly raining as I write, which is good because the water will go into the ground and not run off the very dry surface. Already the daffodils are fading and need dead-heading. They have been magnificent this year, but a short season.

The Iden and Playden Garden Society will be holding the Spring Flower and Produce Show on Saturday 14th April at 2.30 pm in the Village Hall.There are classes for many varieties of daffodils, tulips, flowering shrubs, hellebores, clematis, floral art, early vegetables and a domestic section. I note that there is not a children’s section. Would one be successful?

There will be refreshments, a plant and produce stall and a raffle. This is reckoned to be the friendliest Garden Society in the area and you will be warmly welcomed as an exhibitor or a visitor.

Playden Parish Council met last week, with no member of the public present. Is it that Playden folk feel that they cannot influence any County or District decisions, or that Playden is merely a suburb of Rye? It’s no good complaining after any decisions if you were not there to hear all about it.

There has been a strong response to the letter drop re No Cold Calling, and information had been passed to ESCC.

The work on the Hastings to Bexhill new road is expected to begin next year. The ESCC Road Steward will inspect the road surface near the junction of the A268 with the road to Iden. He will also look at the signage there which is confusing.

Two planning applications were passed with no objections. RR/2012/518/C Playden School and RR/2012/387/P The Peace and Plenty are the relevant numbers.

150 Jubilee mugs will be ordered, 94 for the pupils at school and the remainder will be offered for sale to interested people and at the Jubilee Picnic at £5 each. If you wish to stake a claim, let the council know.

Some entertainment has already been arranged for the picnic and live music is being enquired about. Anyone wishing to know more about the plans could come to a council meeting!! Handbills should be delivered to each house giving details.

The Annual General Meeting will be at 7 pm on Thursday 3rd May in the W. I. Hall. This will include the election of Officers. There is still a vacancy on the council for a new member.

The Mobile Library will be at Poppyfield on Monday from 11.30 to 11.50 am.

Playden W.I. will be meeting on Monday 16th April at 2 pm, when Larri Hayhurst will tell about ‘Palliative Care in Armenia - My Experiences as a Lecturer’. The competition is any object beginning with ‘O’.

Rye and District Camera Club will have Club Competitions in the W. I. Hall at 7.30 pm, with Glyn Bareham as the judge.

The Ferry Road Health Centre and Rye Medical Centre Patient Participation Groups announce a talk and question time on ‘Skin Diseases and Management’ at Rye Primary School on Wednesday 18th April, 6 pm for 6.30 pm. The speaker is Dr. Mahendra Kondageri (M. B. B. S. and Diploma in Dermatology.) Everyone is welcome.

The Rye and District Association of the National Trust will be meeting in Playden W. I. Hall on Thursday 19th April to hear a talk by David Clark on ‘Epic Voyages of History.’

On Saturday 21st April there will be a Spring Sale in Playden Church from 11 am to 1 pm. There will be refreshments, home cooking - cakes, preserves, - plants, books, toys, crafts, gifts and a raffle.

Later on this month there is the Annual Church meeting on Tuesday 24th April, at 7 pm in St. Michael’s Church, AGM of Friends of Playden Church on Saturday 28th April at 10.30 am and the Car Treasure Hunt on Sunday 29th April, 2.30 pm from the Church gate.

The 11 am service for Low Sunday will be Parish Communion led by the vicar.
