Playden village voice

It may be that the lack of wind and rain during March has contributed to the absolutely magnificent displays of daffodils of many shapes, sizes and colours. They really are lovely this year. Yes, we need the rain, but there is this bonus.

At the third attempt to run the Friends of Playden Quiz and Fish and Chip Supper, we had a splendid evening. The Playden W. I. Hall was full of cheerful quizzers, all fiercely competitive. After all the marks had been totalled, a tie at the top was discovered, so a play-off had to take place. One member of each team was nominated to play Heads and Tails, a non-academic game to decided the winner.

The outcome was a win for Ray’s Girls, with the Groovy Grannies just losing out to second place. No idea yet of the proceeds for the maintenance for the church, but it was very good fun, always remembering that ‘fun’ is three quarters of ‘fund’, and that is what we are about.

The next event for FOPC will be the AGM at 10.30 am on Saturday 28th April in the Church. Short reports will be presented,and the accounts, and a speaker has been arranged to give us a short talk. Tea and coffee will be available too. Membership subscriptions can be paid at this time.

This is immediately followed by the Car Treasure Hunt on Sunday 29th April, leaving the church gate at 2.30 pm.

Looking ahead, The Playden Weekend Celebration of Arts, Craft and Music will take place on 12th and 13th May, and the Midsummer Open Gardens will be on 23rd and 24th June.

The Iden and Playden Spring Flower and Produce Show will be on Saturday 14th April at 2.30 pm in Iden Village Hall.

Playden Church will be holding a Spring Fair on Saturday 21st April. It will be open from 11 am to 1 pm. There will be refreshments, home cooking, plants, books, toys, crafts, gifts and a raffle.

The Annual Parish Church Meeting (APCM) will be on Tuesday 24th April at 7 pm in St. Michael’s Church. This will see the election of Church Wardens and members of the PCC.

There is now a box In the porch at church for washed little plastic pots of any size of Actimel, Activia and Shape yoghurts. Each pot is worth 2p and they can be recycled to raise funds.

And please remember the ink cartridges too. £30 has been raised from these, so please keep them coming in.

On Wednesday 11th April Rye Harbour Nature Reserve has a Hunt for Minibeasts from 2 to 3.30 pm. Meet at the car park at 2 pm.

On the Friday, 13th April, from 10 am to 4 pm you can play ‘I Spy....’ This is a circular walk of about 2 miles around the Reserve using an activity sheet which you collect from the Lime Kiln Information Centre

Donations would be appreciated for each of these events.

Unfortunately Playden school will not be able to open the swimming pool this year. It is in a poor condition and maintenance costs are prohibitive. The governing body will be organising a meeting very soon when the whole school community can explore the possibilities for the future. As a means of compensation, children in Years 1 and 2 will have a series of swimming lessons at Rye Sports Centre from the start of next term.

The children who went to the Isle of Wight for the week really benefited from the lovely warm weather.

School reopens on Monday 16th April.

Services today for Good Friday are first at Iden at 12 noon until 1 pm when there will be a Vigil At the Foot of the Cross. The Last Hour will be from 2 to 3 pm at Playden.

The Easter Eve service is at Playden at 8 pm with Compline and the lighting of the Easter Candle and the Renewal of Baptismal Vows.

The Easter Day service will be at 11 am with a Baptism, led by the Vicar.
