Tracey Orr, who runs The Clock Shop in the High Street, Hurstpierpoint, said the African parrot - known as Alfie - had disappeared after she inadvertently left open some French doors on Saturday.

Distraught Tracey has searched everywhere and put out messages on social media.

At one stage Alfie was spotted on a nearby bus stop roof and Tracey rushed out to try and recapture him. “I climbed the bus stop but he was so frightened he flew into a tree in the church garden.”

But when she looked again there was no sign of the bird.

“It is dreadful and so sad to think of him on his own,” said Tracey.
