Pledge to restore station to former glory

In a meeting with Railtrack, MP Gregory Barker 'put a rocket under plans' to replace windows and restore the canopy of the building.

He feels this is not sufficient and the station deserves a more imaginative approach to refurbishment.

The Grade II listed building underwent repairs to brickwork, platforms and canopies last year. New lights were installed in the entrance hall.

These repairs were part of a 685,000 package offered by Railtrack in 2000.

New proposals could take the restoration of the building to new levels.

Rother council leader Cllr Graham Gubby joined Mr Barker in talks with Railtrack last Friday.

In addition to preliminary plans for window and canopy repairs, Mr Barker asked for the following improvements:

*Removal of disused kiosk and restoration of station facade

*A new forecourt design with floral displays and hanging baskets

*Recognition of the importance of the building and the impression it gives to visitors in an imaginative refurbishment.

He said "The state of Bexhill station is a disgrace. For too long this important building has been a neglected eyesore. Last month I called a meeting with Railtrack at the House of Commons to put a rocket under their plans for Bexhill. I am very glad to say that since our last meeting in March they have been working on some new proposals that could transform the station."

Friday's meeting added to the MP's hopes for the plans: "I am pleased to say that today's proposals represent real progress in providing a gateway to the town of which Bexhill can be proud."

Council leader Graham Gubby said: "Restoring Bexhill station will provide a glorious gateway to the town on the threshold of a new future. I am grateful for the proactive approach taken by our MP in recognising Bexhill station is a major piece in the jigsaw puzzle in the regeneration of the town and for the enthusiasm shown by all interested parties."

Railtrack's estate manager and head design architect were present at last week's meeting.
