COFFEE MORNING: The coffee morning tomorrow, Saturday, at Polegate Community Centre is hosted by Polegate Town Council. All welcome in the lounge from 10am to noon.

Or, brisk pace, Country Park Circuit, 7.5 miles with Naomi and Pete. Walk starts from Fairlight Road picnic site car park near Hastings 9.45am GR 847117. Public house option. Note car park is south of North Seat on left of Fairlight Road, not the car park at Fairlight Church. On Sunday, Head and Over, 10.5 miles with Tony W. Meet bus 12A, 9.46am Terminus Road to Cuckmere public house where walk starts at 10.10am. On Wednesday evening, Summers Lease, 4 miles with Bridget W. Meet bus 12, 6pm Terminus Road to East Dean. Walk starts at East Dean car park 6.30pm, parking available at East Dean.

CONCERT: A concert was given by the Downland Singers at the Friends of Eastbourne Hospitals Summer Fair at East Dean, on Sunday June 19. Not an ideal place in which to sing as the choir had to contend with folk talking loudly whilst they were singing and the clatter of teas, coffee and cakes being sold next to the stage. Including the dropping of a tray, which made such a loud noise. I admire the choir for keeping going. Whilst this was going on, one member of the public squeezed past the piano during the rendering of In a Monestry Garden to get a handbag. Surely it would have been less disruptive to wait until he had finished playing. The songs sung by the choir included a rendering of Sing a Song of Sixpence by J Michael Diack, followed by Top of the World by Bettis and Carpenter. This was followed by a few verses from Leonard Cohens Hallelujah, also a rousing When I’m Sixty Four, a Lennon and McCarney Beetles number. Then it was a rendering of The Long Day Closes by Chorley and Sullivan, followed by In a Monestry Garden by Ketelbey. Then a Gospel Medley a traditional piece in three parts with different words to each part, which the choir sang all together in harmony. This was followed by Wouldn’t it be Lovely by Learner and Lowe. Two pieces from the shows included you were somehow here again, and Music of the Night by Lloyd Webber and Hart. The choir finished their concert with a rousing Rose of England by Novello and Hassall and finished up with the Abba song, Thank You for the Music by Anderson and Ulvaeus. ELHS: The next meeting takes place on Wednesday at 2.30pm in All Souls Church, Susans Road. Not the hall. An extra meeting for the summer when member Peter Wood will give an illustrated talk on the history of All Souls Church. Visitors welcome. Doors open at 2.15pm.

POLEGATE WINDMILL: Are holding their Summer Fair on Sunday July 17 on the Platt at the windmill, when John Purcell will bring Con Brio again to entertain with a mixture of music during the afternoon. Once again we will need helpers to run stalls and tables. Please contact Patricia Stevens on 734496. Also required cakes for the cake stall and items for the bric-a-brac stall.
