Police awards for officers who go beyond the call of duty

Amongst those presented with awards at the ceremony at the East Sussex National Gold Club and Spa at Uckfield were PC Donna Powell, who is based at Battle.

In February, PC Powell was called to an address in the town and helped save the life of a woman who was submerged in a bath.

PC Powell had to force open the bathroom door and carry out CPR on the woman until her pulse returned.

PC Powell was presented with an Outstanding Frontline Award.

PC Simon Knight and PC Alan Simes both received an Outstanding Investigator Award.

The award citation read: “This award recognises your sheer determination and passion to achieve results, as shown by your excellent and thorough investigation into criminal damage in a quiet neighbourhood.

“As a result, three people were brought to justice and held to account for their actions, helping ease the minds of the elderly and vulnerable residents in the area.”

Charles McIlwrick received a certificate in recognition of two years voluntary service.

The former police officer helped set up the Bexhill and Rother Neighbourhood Watch and continues to monitor progress of committees involved with the scheme.

He is also the chairman of the local Neighbourhood Watch.

Cadet Ellie French, who lives in Crowhurst, and fellow cadet Sam Maclean, were presented with an Outstanding Public Service Award after coming to the aid of an elderly lady who was having a heart attack at the Bexhill Lions Triathlon event.

The citation read: “Your clear thinking, accurate assessment, positive and decisive action in dealing with the situation fits firmly in line with the Sussex Police values.”

East Sussex Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Robin Smith said: “The awards recognise the dedication and bravery of officers and volunteers who strive to offer the communities of East Sussex the highest standards of public service.”

There were 75 awards presented at this year’s event.
