Police forced to leap away from Newhaven drink driver

Police officers had to jump out of the way of a car in Newhaven last month after a drink driver refused to pull over.

Sussex Police say officers were responding to an unrelated matter in Bridge Street at about 2.20am on Saturday, June 11, when they saw a Ford Fiesta without any lights on being driven erratically at speed.

Police say the driver failed to stop or even slow down when confronted by the officers, forcing them to leap out of harm’s way.

The driver – Jaqueline Brill, a 28-year-old travel agent, of Elphick Road, Newhaven – was arrested nearby in Dacre Road and charged with driving with 74 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath in her system. The legal limit is 35 micrograms per 100ml of breath.

She later pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on June 27 and was disqualified from driving for 17 months. She was also ordered to pay a £450 fine, £85 costs and a £45 victim surcharge.

The conviction comes as part of Operation Dragonfly, Surrey and Sussex Police’s summer crackdown on drink and drug-drivers

A total of 21 motorists have now been convicted since the operation started on June 10.
