Police hunt vegetable thief

POTENTIALLY prize-winning vegetables have been stolen from a church.

Between 6pm on Thursday (September 20) and 9am on Friday, rhubarb, leeks and beetroot, all of which were due to be entered into a competition this weekend, were taken from the church warden’s vegetable plot, at St Mary’s Church, Church Lane, Yapton.

There had also been an attempt to break into the garden store.

At about 8pm on Thursday, a man, in his 30s, was seen in the grounds, though when challenged, he said he had lost his dog.

PC Jackie Shears said; “Did you see anyone walking down the road with a large quantity of vegetables or anyone hanging around the church during this period? If so please call us via 101 quoting serial 0978 0f 21/9.”
