Police neutralise another drugs den

REPORTS of a group of men acting suspiciously around a lock-up garage at the rear of shops in London Road early last Thursday morning led police to find another 'cannabis factory' hidden within the town.

Sergeant Tricia Reeve-Fowkes, of Bexhill police, said: “Thanks to a tip off, officers attended and discovered around 100 cannabis plants and associated growing equipment inside the garage.

“The plants were seized and enquiries are continuing in an effort to trace those responsible for cultivating the drug.”

Cannabis, also known as marijuana, dope, grass, weed or, in a more potent form, skunk, is a Class B illegal drug. Grown in such quantities, it often has a street value of several thousands of pounds.

Last month police raided a detached house in Barnhorn Road, Little Common, where three rooms full of cannabis plants in various stages of growth were seized, together with hydroponics equipment used to nourish them.

Growers had gone to great lengths to secure the property from intruders, with multi-lock steel doors and frames installed, but trained officers executing a warrant were nevertheless able to force their way in.

Raids elsewhere in the Bexhill area earlier this year have uncovered further drug-related activities, with police often acting on intelligence to target sources of supply.

Sgt Reeve-Fowkes said: “We hope the message is getting through that growing and supplying illegal drugs will not be tolerated, and police will continue to disrupt such operations at every opportunity.”
