Police probe crash

POLICE want to speak to the driver of a green saloon car who was seen driving eastwards at the Bottleneck in Lewes High Street seconds before a 72-seater bus ploughed into the side of the 15th Century Bookshop.

The crash, which could easily have ended in serious injury, happened at 2.15pm on Thursday last week.

The roof of the Brighton-bound double-decker bus sheered completely off after striking the protruding jetty of the bookshop.

But all eight passengers, including two sitting upstairs, were unhurt, although one person was treated for shock.

The outside of the bookshop was damaged but, it is thought, not structurally.

A lorry was parked on the other side of the road when the bus went past but is not thought to have had any part in the accident.

Police are currently downloading images from the video camera which was carried on the bus in a bid to find out exactly how the accident happened.

Said Inspector Dave Padwick: 'It was a miracle that no one was seriously injured. This is a traffic blackspot in which drivers need to be extra careful.'

Anyone who saw the accident, particularly the driver of the green saloon, should contact PC Steve Norton on 01323 414054.

The main Lewes High Street was closed for three hours while debris, particularly the entire bus roof, was cleared away.
