Police seize 'nuisance' driver's car

A NUISANCE driver has had his car seized by police.

Officers took a white Vauxhall Nova from the owner because of complaints from people living on the Nevill estate.

The car was seized using legislation (a Section 59 order) which allows police to take cars away from owners if the vehicle is used in a way which causes alarm or distress to the public.

People complained about the way the car was driven and loud music. And on Thursday last week police said a passenger shouted abuse from the car.

PC Duncan Ellison said: 'We have had numerous complaints over the previous months about various vehicles in Lewes town.

'Many of the vehicles and their drivers have had a section 59 warning previously.

'Once they have had the warning, should the vehicle or person come to police notice again for similar incidents police can seize their vehicle.

'Hopefully this will warn those committing similar offences that police will act on complaints received about anti-social behaviour involving vehicles.'

The owner of an impounded must pay 120 to get the vehicle back. If they do not do this immediately there are additional parking charges for each day it is kept.
