Police warn public to be aware of bogus callers in Littlehampton

SUSSEX Police are warning people to be vigilant following reports of callers purporting to be from Southern Water in the Littlehampton area.

PC Jackie Shears from Arun Neighbourhood Police Team said: “We are advising the public to be alert and not let anyone into their homes without first checking their identity with Southern Water. Any genuine caller will be more than happy to provide identification and in all cases you are entitled to telephone the utility supplier to confirm their credentials.”

Police said there have been reports occupants of an 08-registered silver Peugeot Expert van have been knocking on residential properties in Littlehampton and claiming they are from Southern Water.

Julie Carly, metering communications manager from Southern Water, said: “Southern Water’s five-year programme to install water meters for the majority of its customers arrived in Littlehampton in late May, with installation teams working in Rustington, Angmering, East Preston and Ferring until around late August.

“Customer safety is a priority for Southern Water and we are working closely with Sussex Police and the public to make sure everyone is aware when our metering teams are working in their area. In most cases, the installation of a new meter will not involve Southern Water staff or contractors needing to enter people’s homes. However, on some occasions this may be necessary and in such a situation an appointment would be made in advance. Most new meters are installed in the ground just outside the property.”

She said staff working on the Southern Water metering programme are easily identifiable – they wear uniforms, and drive vehicles, carrying the Southern Water name and logo. If in doubt, ask for an identity card.

PC Jackie Shears added: “Sussex Police take this type of criminality very seriously and we are aware that the elderly and vulnerable are often the most targeted. If you have elderly neighbours in your area please advise them not to let anyone into their home without making calls to check their credentials. If you have any doubts about a caller’s identity dial 999.”
