Plans to build a four-storey block of 59 flats in Three Bridges have been approved by Crawley Borough Council.

The application for the former TSB site in Russell Way, was given the thumbs-up during a meeting of the planning committee on Monday (February 8).

Submitted by Bellway Homes Ltd, the L-shaped block will include 23 one-bedroom, 33 two-bedroom and three three-bedroom flats of which 12 will be classed as affordable.

The number of affordable homes was the only minor quibble raised during the meeting.

Peter Smith (Lab, Ifield) called the plans ‘a jolly nice application in a good sustainable location’, adding: “It’s disappointing there are only going to be 12 affordable units but I know that is something that viability drives – and it’s difficult to argue with it.

“So let’s look at it the other way round and say it’s good that there’s going to be 12 affordable units!”

The development will include parking for 40 cars, along with motorcycle parking and space for more than 100 bicycles.

Daniel Bradbury, regional director of Bellway South London, said: “The site, which has stood vacant for over two decades, is long-overdue the regeneration it is now set to receive, which will be a welcome addition to the Three Bridges area of Crawley and will provide much-needed new housing to the town.

“Unlike some of the previous proposals for the site, our plans were well-considered and will enhance the character and the appearance of the area while delivering a total of 59 new apartments.

“We will now prepare to move onto the site and begin construction work in the near future, with a view to releasing the first of the apartments for sale in late 2021.”
