Plans for new medical centre in Hailsham move forward after cabinet approves concept design

Wealden District Council (WDC) says plans for a proposed new medical centre in Hailsham have moved a step closer.

The council said its Cabinet has now approved the concept design for the centre on Reef Way and agreed to progress the project to the detailed design phase.

WDC also said it has gone out to tender to appoint a contractor to develop the detailed design, which is known as RIBA Stage 3.

It said this work will involve further site investigations and developing the technical design to prepare plans for the planning application, which is expected in summer 2027.

WDC explained that the proposed centre would bring two existing GP practices together into one purpose-built, modern facility while increasing the capacity of primary care services in Hailsham and its surrounding areas.

Councillor Kelvin Williams, Alliance for Wealden (Liberal Democrat) and lead councillor for Public Health and Asset Management, said: “Delivering a new medical centre at Reef Way is an important commitment to the people of Hailsham. As the town has grown, existing GP practices have faced increased pressure on their services, and their current buildings have limited space to expand. This purpose-built centre would increase capacity for GP appointments and treatment, improve accessibility for patients and provide modern facilities that support the long-term health needs of Hailsham’s growing and ageing population. We have remained determined to move the project forward despite the significant financial and construction challenges it has faced.”

The council said NHS Sussex Integrated Care Board (ICB) has identified Hailsham as a priority location for new primary care facilities. WDC said the town had been highlighted because its growing and aging population is increasing the demand for GP services. The council is now working with the ICB and health partners in the area to help deliver an accessible medical centre that meets current and future healthcare needs.

WDC said the completed concept design is for a three-storey centre with 30 consulting rooms, reception and waiting areas, clinical and office space, meeting rooms and staff facilities. The council said the centre would also have accessible public toilets and a larger Changing Places toilet.
