Your views sought on proposed changes to Petworth parking

Views of residents, visitors and businesses are being sought on proposed changes to parking in Market Square and Golden Square in Petworth.

Concerns have been raised regarding the existing parking bays on the east side of Market Square adjacent to the Leconfield Hall, the council said.

Vehicles parked in the current bays can often overhang the kerb and encroach onto the footway, reducing the available space for pedestrians and affecting accessibility.

This is particularly important for wheelchair users, people with pushchairs, and those with mobility impairments who rely on clear and unobstructed pedestrian routes.

“The proposed changes are intended to improve parking efficiency, reduce vehicle overhang onto the footway, and make better use of the available parking space within the square,” the council said.

It is considering the following changes:

* Replacement of the existing parking bays on the east side of Market Square with chevron-style parking bays

* Reconfiguration of the parking layout to reduce vehicle overhang onto the footway.

* Creation of one additional parking space at the top of the square, increasing overall parking capacity.

The council said one extra parking space would be created and the changes would ‘enhance the overall appearance and functionality of Market Square’.

In the area off Golden Square, other than the private cobbled section, the council said there are no parking restrictions.

“As a result, vehicles can park close to the corner and junction areas, creating congestion and reducing visibility for motorists and pedestrians,” it said.

“The current situation can make it difficult for vehicles to manoeuvre safely through the square and may present challenges for those walking in the area, particularly during busy periods.”

The following changes are proposed:

* Introduction of double yellow lines in the corner areas outside the entrance to the Old Bakery Area to prevent obstructive parking and improve visibility.

* Creation of a one-hour time-limited parking bay to support short-stay parking for visitors and customers of local businesses.

* Extension of the double yellow lines along the High Street up to the cobbled area.

* Protection of the cobbled area as private parking only, reducing unauthorised parking and improving access for authorised users.
