Eastbourne’s current MP Caroline Ansell has offered to help her predecessor Stephen Lloyd who has been left stranded in New Zealand due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Lloyd is currently on holiday with his partner Cherine on the country’s South Island and has been unable to get a flight back to the UK after both Sydney and Singapore closed its airports to transfer flights.

The former MP, who lost his seat to Mrs Ansell in last December’s General Election, says he is in touch with the High Commissioner in New Zealand but this lunchtime Mrs Ansell said she would help if needed.

She said, “We haven’t received a request for assistance from the town’s former MP Stephen Lloyd, who I understand is in New Zealand. Stephen is my constituent and I stand ready to help him, if he would like me to.”

Mrs Ansell’s comments came as she said her office through the Foreign and Commonwealth Office was helping constituents still left abroad due to the coronavirus.

She said, “Presently, we have brought five people back from Cyprus and Spain and we’re helping four people in New Zealand. We have helped one person in Peru get in contact with the British Embassy in Lima and they are flying back soon. Another constituent in Bali is also being assisted.”
