Cycle racks to boost seafront are installed

CYCLE racks have begun to appear on Bognor Regis seafront for the first time.

The initial nine of the metal tubes were put into the promenade west of the pier recently. Three are opposite the Royal Norfolk Hotel, three opposite the Royal Hotel and three opposite The Waverley. More will follow to take the total number of racks to 25.

Arun district councillor Phil Hitchins (Aldwick West) welcomed the arrival of the racks after he called for them as part of Arun’s regeneration work.

“It’s good for tourism to have these racks. They will attract more cyclists to the area.

“More people are likely to cycle to the seafront if they know they have somewhere to leave their bikes.

“The more people there are, the more money that is spent and the more jobs which are created.

“Cycle racks are only a small matter but they make things easier for people.

“I was totally surprised when I moved to this area to find a complete lack of cycle racks along the seafront.

“I walked from West Park to Butlin’s and up to Hotham Park and there wasn’t one to be seen.

“The only racks were in the London Road precinct and the High Street and they were full,” he said.

BRighter Bognor secretary Jean Coles used its latest newsletter to echo its members’ call for the town to be made fit for cyclists.
