David Cameron is majority’s pick to be PM after election

The majority of people surveyed across Sussex believe David Cameron will remain as Prime Minister after May’s General Election.

According to research conducted by the West Sussex County Times around three quarters of people in the Chichester, Worthing and Eastbourne areas thought Mr Cameron would keep the top job, a figure that was closer to two thirds (65 per cent) in Hastings.

He was also the top choice for PM in all four areas, with only Hastings picking Labour leader Ed Miliband second. In the other three areas UKIP’s Nigel Farage was the second choice.

Liberal Democrat Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg was neck and neck with the Green Party’s Natalie Bennett, apart from Hastings where she outscored Mr Clegg by 16 to three per cent.

While the majority believed Mr Cameron would remain as PM after May, just 28 per cent of those in Hastings expected Mr Miliband to take the country’s top job, a higher figure than in Chichester (19 per cent), Worthing (21 per cent), and Eastbourne (20 per cent).

One per cent of respondents thought Mr Clegg would be PM in Chichester, Eastbourne, and zero per cent in Worthing and Hastings.

Asked what issues would have the most bearing on how they voted, health policy came top in all four areas.

The second choice was immigration policy in Hastings, Worthing, and Eastbourne, immigration policy and approach to Europe and the EU in Chichester.

The surveys had 324 responses in Hastings, 296 in Eastbourne, 203 in Chichester, and 295 in Worthing.
