Decision due on new homes between Fontwell and Eastergate

Plans for 42 new homes between Eastergate and Fontwell will be considered by Arun District Council’s planning committee next week.

The application, from Surrey based Reside Developments Ltd, is for land west of Fontwell Avenue and includes 22 three-bedroom homes, 12 two-bedroom, four four-bedroom and four one-bedroom homes.

It will be put to a meeting of the committee on Wednesday October 28, where the recommendation from officers is to approve the development.

The council has received 21 letters objecting to the application, with objections also lodged by Barnham & Eastergate Parish Council and Walberton Parish Council.

The loss of agricultural land, the fact the site is in the countryside and is not included in the neighbourhood development plan were among the main concerns raised.

According to Arun council officers: “There is some conflict with policies in the development plan concerning the development of a countryside site, loss of agricultural land, parking shortfall, shortfall in some gardens & interface distances, lack of a drainage impact assessment and the concentration of affordable homes.

“However, the policies of the development plan relating to the supply of housing have reduced weight as the Council is not able to demonstrate an adequate supply of housing land.”
